The new DST and Windows 2K do not mix!

People with Windows 2000 are about to realize that the machines are not changing to the 'new' DST (Daylight Stupid Time). The easy fix is put Windows in a time zone, one from where you actually are and disable the 'Automatically adjust clock for daylight saving changes. We are in Texas (Central Time), but I have the time zone set for Eastern Time. Folks, it would be real easy to blame Microsoft for this, but it is the United States Government that caused it! Congress working hard for you! The real solution to Daylight Saving Time is: Always or Never. Congress's failure should not surprise anyone! In the 45 years I have been in the world, Congress has never passed a new law that was needed! I don't usually put such things in Top Tech Stories, but this is Technical and they are causing me some big headaches. My hat is off to Arizona for getting this right with the Never option. Yes folks, the work around does work. Once again we need another work around to deal with Congress!

Many of you got a monthly reminder about staying on the Top Tech Stories mail list. I have turned this option off so nobody will get them any more. As you all know, if you say put me on the list, we do it now, and if you say take me off the list, we do it now. So we will not be sending any more monthly reminders.

Thank You

Jim

http://www.modhost.com is an excellent place to have your web pages and email service!

We are going to be offering web hosting and email account setup for our own customers in northern Texas. We have never been able to make web hosting on our own servers profitable, but now, we have our own reseller account on modhost.com (ModHost specializes in providing superior quality web hosting solutions for businesses and individuals worldwide. You can have two domains hosted that include web pages, email and a great number of extras for as little as $4.00 a month. They have several different flavors to include the fastest and best. I ran our Web Page Monitor service on our own web pages, which are now on modhost.com, and the reliability actually came out to be 99.081% reliable on their servers. Even if we only rebooted our machines for the monthly Microsoft updates, you can't get more up-time than that!

I am pretty impressed with these folks! But what about speed. Our web pages are faster, than they ever were going through our own DSL connection. modhost.com and Tech Jim are going to be doing network hosting business for a long time.

For my fellow techies out there, you can setup your own stuff through FTP tools they have, that are included, or the support FrontPage Extensions as well! One of our biggest concerns with web pages in general is the ability to have search tools and non-geek dates! Some software will force you to use geeky dates such as dd/mm/yyyy, mm/dd/yy or yy-mm-dd is all very confusing to many.  We demand easy readable dates for our web pages as well. Today's date is Monday, 17 July 2006. on the web site, and as you can see, we still have our search tools on every one of our ecommerce pages! Thus far, we have given up nothing, and yet our email and web sites are faster, way more up-time! Customer service is pretty good too, they will give you a ticket number for any issues, in my case to upgrade our service to a reseller account! They even take care of the DNS at no extra charge.

For my fellow non-techies the bottom line is this, you will get low cost email and web pages. We are a reseller of modhost.com now, and we can show you how to use the service yourself or set it up for you! They have tools to help you create a web site, so you can start from nothing or you can put your existing web site on their servers. We might use their tools to give our web pages an over-hall, but for now, we are putting our pages on their servers as-is. TechJIm.com, Shopus24.com, householdsoftware.com, worksoftware.biz, and KimsBooks.com are now on their servers!

To my fellow businesses, I say it is a damn good deal. More than just web site hosting! We could go on all day selling their products, but visit the web site for your self and you will see what we mean. Fast and reliable!

To my fellow PC users, you get a allot of bang for your buck. The web site is http://www.modhost.com

ActiveX and Scripting

By Jim O'Connor
Top Tech Stories

This week there were two more issues with Internet Explorer for scripting bugs that MICROSOFT STILL HAS NO FIX for. Once again this week we also had another Adobe (used to be Macromedia) Flash issue. Flash is an ActiveX thing. Keep in mind that these are issues that have been found just this week.  So I want to re-iterate why most web pages would be much better not to use ActiveX and scripting. Flash is used almost entirely for advertising, so you really will not miss much to kill it. No computers that have ActiveX and Scripting disabled are subject to any of these types of vulnerabilities. Our web pages have an excellent search without ActiveX or Scripting. The real problem with Flash is there is no way to turn it off once you have installed except to turn off all ActiveX in your browser. If you put Flash in your web pages, you are not just asking customers to trust you, but you are forcing your customers to trust all Flash program writers in the world. The gain any enterprise running Flash on their web sites is far outweighed by the threat YOU create for your customers on other web sites that will automatically be trusted to run these programs.

From  2 Mar 2006:

You can increase your computer speed and make your computer much  safer by turning off ActiveX and scripting in your browser. Then for those web sites that you have to have running scripts, you add them to your 'Trusted sites' list in the Security tab of 'Internet Options' in your browser. It is possible to download software to your machine without knowing it, but turning off ActiveX and Scripting reduces this to almost no chance at all. If you would like instructions to do this please go to the following link: http://occcsa.com/disablescripts/default1.htm
